Qualifying Tips
To nail a qualifying run at Bristol in the NASCAR O’Reilly Series car, you have to change your mindset from the race. Since you do not need to worry about tire wear over two laps, you can be vastly more aggressive on entry and use lines that sacrifice the tires for maximum raw speed
- Get to the Wall: Coming down the backstretch on your out-lap, climb all the way to the outside wall.
- The Launch: As you round Turns 3 and 4 to take the green flag, dive low to build a massive diamond shape, then hammer the throttle out of Turn 4. You want to cross the start/finish line carrying maximum possible straightaway speed (ideally targeting 140+ mph) to start Lap 1.
- High Entry: Enter the corner higher up (closer to the middle or top groove).
- Aggressive Trail-Braking: Use a sharp, aggressive stab of the brake pedal (up to 40% pressure) upon entry to force the heavy front nose to cut down sharply.
- Late Apex & Straight Exit: Turn the car down abruptly in the center of the corner to clip a late apex right at the inside yellow line. This straightens your exit entirely, allowing you to hammer full throttle and let the car float naturally out to the wall without spinning the rear tires.
- The Line Switch: Abandon the diamond line and commit fully to wrapping the bottom lane.
- Arc the Entry: Drive deeper into Turns 1 and 3 than you did on the previous lap. Drag the brake lightly (10% to 15% trail-braking) to hook the left-side tires directly onto the yellow paint. [1]
- No Dead Zone: Do not coast in the center of the corner. The second you transition off the brake, get right back onto partial throttle. Park your foot at 50% throttle to keep the chassis stable, then squeeze to 100% as you unwind the wheel off the corner.
Race Strategy Tips
- Let Aggressive Drivers Go: If someone is hounding your bumper early in a run, let them by. They will likely melt their right-rear tire within 20 laps, allowing you to easily pass them back later when they lose lateral grip.
- Keep the Steering Wheel Straight: The more you crank the wheel in the center of the corner, the more the car pushes, heating up the right-front tire. Use trail-braking to rotate the nose so you can keep your steering inputs as straight as possible.
Race Setup
A balanced, race-ready setup built for high-speed stability, consistent long-run pace, and strong corner-exit speed as the tires begin to wear.
The race setup is designed to remain predictable in traffic while giving the driver enough versatility to move between lanes, manage dirty air, and maintain momentum throughout a fuel run.
Qualifying Setup
A faster, more aggressive setup designed to maximize aerodynamic efficiency, short-run grip, and single-lap speed.
