Description
- Bump Drafting is Mandatory: Unlike previous generations, the Next Gen car requires you to physically push the car ahead to sustain speed. If you are not touching bumpers, you are losing time.
- Lock Bumper-to-Bumper: On the straightaways, look to “lock up” with the car ahead. Smoothly make contact and stay glued to their rear bumper to push your line forward.
- Do Not Push in the Corners: Dragging or pushing through the high-banked turns can destabilize the lead car. Drag your brakes slightly or lift off the gas to drag your bumpers apart just before entering the corners.
- The “Wall of Air”: The Next Gen car punches a massive hole in the air, creating a huge draft wake behind it. However, it also creates an immense amount of drag. If you pull out to pass without a line of cars pushing you, you will stall out instantly.
- Side Drafting: You can slow down an opponent by pulling up right next to their rear quarter-panel. This dumps air off your nose onto their spoiler, stalling their momentum and pulling your car forward.
- The “Bubble” Effect: As you close a gap at high speed, you will feel aerodynamic resistance right before you hit their bumper. Expect this “air cushion” and stay flat on the throttle to punch through it and make clean contact.
- The Bottom Lane Rules: The inside white line is the shortest and most stable way around Daytona. It is highly favored during the race.
- Third Lane is Dead: The Next Gen car rarely spreads out into three-wide racing for long. A third lane up against the wall usually loses momentum and drops to the back. Stick to the bottom or middle lanes.
- Energy Management: The speed of a lane depends entirely on how well the cars behind are organized. Watch your mirror—if your lane loses its pusher, immediately look for an opening to merge into the moving line.
- Watch the Temps: Running inches from a bumper cuts off all air to your radiator. Watch your digital dashboard water temperature closely.
- The Clean Air Peek: To prevent blowing your engine, gently shift your car half a lane to the left or right on the straightaways to get a burst of cool air into the front grille, then tuck back in.
- The Final Lap Slingshot: Because of the high drag, the second-place car often has the advantage on the final lap. Wait until the backstretch, build a massive run with your pusher, and time your move to side-draft the leader off Turn 4 to the checkered flag.
